The undisputed champion of outdoor coffeemaking has to be the AeroPress. Compact, versatile, and able to produce a very good cup of coffee, the AeroPress has been my go-to brewing device on every camping trip I been on in the past decade. But brewing good coffee outdoors is a double-edged sword, especially when youโre part of a large party. Making yourself an AeroPress guarantees that you will be making everyone else an AeroPress, sometimes multiple, and while theyโre enjoying their breakfast, taking in the beauty of the great outdoors, youโre stuck staring down a plastic tube playing short-order cook.
But at long last, AeroPress has heard our calls of the wild and have released the all-new AeroPress XL, capable of brewing twice as much coffee in a single batch than the traditional size.
The existence of large-format AeroPress has been hinted at for months now, with the occasional sighting at trade shows across the globe. But the brand has otherwise remained tight-lipped about the XL. But now the cat is out of the bag and the AeroPress XL is available for purchase. Essentially just a scaled-up version of the original, the new XL is capable of brewing 20oz of coffee at a time and can handle all your very particular inverted method, bypass pour brewing peculiarities youโve grown to insist upon in your AeroPress making. The only real difference of note is that the XL requires the new, larger XL filters as opposed to the standard size disk used with every other version.
Alas, a big ole coffee maker also comes with a big ole price tag, as the AeroPress XL retails for $79.95, twice that of the original. But with it comes a larger stirrer, scoop, 100 XL filters, and the all new AeroPress Carafe, a 20oz vessel made of Tritan plastic made specifically for use with the XL. So while yes, you could technically just buy two AeroPresses for the same price, but that means youโre going to have to do twice the work.
As for me, Iโve got Jumbo Love for jumbo coffee brewers, so the AeroPress XL is what Iโm bringing on my next outdoor excursions.
